Automation

Each Topmaster comes standard with Automation. The use of this programmed control system will control the timing of each of the three arm functions, as well as automatically feeding the T-molding and cutting the T-molding to the proper length. The automation is not Computer Numerically Controlled, and it still requires the use of a template.

Machine Cycle Times

Cycle times for combined operations of shaping perimeter, grooving and installing T-molding. Times represent the actual machine operation cycle. Most part which are T-molded on 3 sides can be run two at a time. Panels which are T-molded on two sides can be run four at a time. Consult KRP Topmaster’s Sales Department for specific information. Loading and unloading time is approximately twenty-five to thirty seconds.

Results shown above were obtained while performing all three operations (shaping, grooving and applying T-molding on 1.125 thick particle board panels with high-pressure laminate surface with a 1 inch radius on corners and 3/32″ T-mold face thickness.

Shaping Head

The shaping operation is controlled by a roller bearing following a slightly undersigned template. The shaping spindle is belt-driven at 14,400 rpm by a 10hp motor. The tolling is a standard 3/4″ carbide tipped router (5″ OAL with a 2-1/2″ cut length) held in place with a standard 3/4″ Hardige R8 collect. Note: Special tooling is available for low and high pressure laminates. the shaper head is lubricated with a light oil mist system (capacity 32 oz.) and oil usage is approximately 1 quart every two weeks when running full time. Tool life is approximately 500 parts depending on material, depth if cut and grade of carbide. Diamond tooling has also been used successfully in the Topmaster. The shaper has a combination dust and safety hood which is adjustable for panel thickness and provides a 4″ connection for dust removal.

Grooving Head

The Topmaster groover system utilizes a floating head which indexes off the top surface of the panel to provide a uniform cut depth and height. the standard groover motor is a 3-1/4 HP soft start 5 speed Porter Cable option of a 2 or 3 HP High frequency Perske motor. Note: All models of the grooving systems are mounted on a dovetail slide for faster and precise up and down adjustments. The groover tooling is a 2-1/2 OD carbide tipped 3 or 6 wing kerf saw. The groover head has a combination dust and safety hood which tracks with the cutter. The hood has a 3″ office and a flexible hose attached for dust removal.

Banding Head

The Topmaster uses a pivoting roller wheel providing up to 300 psi to properly insert the T-molding into the slot. The T-molding is fed through a guide system which will handle T-molding up to 2″ wide and 5/8″ thick. The roller wheel is a urethane type wheel which will not mar the surface of the T-Molding, and is enclosed with two caps which work as a guide to position the T-molding for insertion. The banding head features two functions not found on any other T-molding equipment.

Automated Corner Notching

The notching unit is designed to remove a section of the T-molding barb when the T-molding is wrapped around a tight corner radius (under 1″). The notcher utilizes an air sensor to sense the approach of a corner. when the sensor is tripped, a 2-1/2″ cylinder is engaged cutting a 1/2″-round piece from the barb to relieve corner stress.

Automatic T-Mold Cutoff

The T-mold cutoff unit is designed to cut the T-molding to length on parts which have T-molding wrapped around the entire perimeter. The cutoff unit uses a pneumatically controlled trip sensor to sense the start of the T-molding; this sensor is entirely adjustable for both the width of the T-modling and the cutoff length. Once the sensor is tripped, the T-Molding is cut to length.
